MONITORING AND COMBATING ISLAMOPHOBIA

A Project of the Council on American-Islamic Relations

Allen West is a former Republican member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Florida. In 2015, he left his position at Pajamas Media after an altercation with a female staffer during which West “called her a ‘Jewish American princess’ while telling her to ‘shut up.'”

Shortly after, West authored a blog post in which he alleged he was subjected to “Sharia law” because a Walmart employee, whom West identified as Muslim, was working a checkout register and not processing alcohol purchases. The blog post was amended once West learned the employee was under 21 years of age and thus legally prohibited from selling alcohol.

In early 2014, West wrote on his web site, “As those of us not under the spell of political correctness know, Islam does not coexist.” West also claims that Islam is not a religion and that Muslims are a “fifth column” in America. West has asserted that Islam is “a totalitarian theocratic political ideology, it is not a religion.” He also called Islam a “very vile and very vicious enemy that we have allowed to come in this country.”

In 2003, then a Lieutenant Colonel, West was fined $5,000 for using improper methods to force information out of an Iraqi detainee. In 2012, West said he was aware of “78 to 81 members of the Democrat party [in the U.S. Congress] that are members of the communist party.”

West works with the inner core group ACT! for America, praising its leader as “incredible.”
