Type: Donor Advised Fund
Vanguard Charitable Endowment Program is a DAF founded in 1997 and is consistently ranked as among the largest DAFs in the United States. It currently controls $8.5 billion in assets and has administered $7.7 billion in donations since its inception. Its recipients range from educational institutions such as Princeton, Harvard, Stanford, and Columbia Universities, to health and human services, such as Doctors Without Borders and the Boy Scouts of America.
Millions of dollars in Vanguard’s portfolio have also been funneled to anti-Muslim hate groups. From 2014 to 2016, Vanguard granted close to $1.5 million to the Center for Security Policy, the group responsible for commissioning the now discredited, anti-Muslim poll that Trump used to justify the Muslim Ban. Vanguard also granted $820,000 to the Clarion Project, the organization responsible for the production and distribution of the vitriolic and “paranoid style” pseudo-documentary Obsession that was distributed freely to key swing states during the 2008 presidential election. The David Horowitz Freedom Center also received $389,500 between 2014-2016.
Given a total of nearly $2 million to over a dozen anti-Muslim groups. Nearly 360k to Middle East Media Research Institute. $475k to Freedom of Conscience Defense Fund. Over 250k to Center for Security Policy.
