Last Saturday, former Bush administration official Morgan Reynolds drew an enthusiastic capacity crowd to the Wisconsin Historical Society auditorium. It is probably the first time in Historical Society history that a political talk has drawn a full house on a Saturday afternoon at the beginning of final exams.

Reynolds, the former director of the Criminal Justice Center at the National Center for Policy Analysis, and the ex-top economist for George W. Bush's Labor Department, charged the Bush administration with gross malfeasance, and proposed the prosecution of top administration officials.

Normally, if a prestigious UW alumnus and ex-Bush administration official were to come to the Wisconsin Historical Society to spill the beans about a Bush administration scandal, it would make the news. The local TV stations would cover it, and it would merit front page headlines in The Capital Times and Wisconsin State Journal.

Trip to Turkey will help build bridges

By Bill Berlow
ASSOCIATE EDITOR

With a few exceptions, we humans have done a good job of casting aspersions on people who are different from us.

It's easy to paint members of other tribes with a broad brush, to assume that their messengers of hate speak for the many instead of the few.

t's easier still to just throw up your hands in disgust and do nothing.
It takes more effort to build connections based on what we have in common rather than swap epithets, or worse, over things that we don't share - whether the issue is politics, race or religion.

So today I'm flying to Turkey.

Another reason to kill us: Western decadence, Jihad

In a recent Washington Post story about Abdul Rahman, the Afghan whose Christian conversion almost earned him a death penalty, reporter Pamela Constable wrote that Afghans are grateful to the United States for its economic support. But, she added, many Afghans “remain leery of Western values and associate Christianity with fornication and drunkenness.”
Clearly, Afghans link Christianity with America, and link America with decadence. But why would they do that?

Well, let’s see. In the news this week, we have stories of Duke University lacrosse players accused of getting drunk and raping an exotic dancer. Pictures of two unmarried and very pregnant American actresses, Angelina Jolie and Katie Holmes, have been splashed across the tabloids. A DVD about homosexual lovers, Brokeback Mountain, is selling briskly.

The issue of apostasy under Islamic Law (shari'ah), brought recently to public attention in the widely publicized case of the conversion of an Afghani citizen, raises troubling questions regarding freedom of religion and interfaith relations.[1]

The Afghan State's persecution of an Afgani man who converted to Christianity in 1990 while working for a Christian non-governmental raises in the mind of many the question of the compatibility of Islam with plural democracy and freedom of religion. Although the state court dropped the case under intense outside pressure, the compatibility issue has not been resolved as the judge invoked insanity as the basis for dismissing the case.[2]

The case was presented as an example of conflict between Islam and democratic governance, but in many respects the case is rooted in, and influenced by, the forced secularization of Muslim society, and the absence of free debate under authoritarian regimes that currently dominate much of the Muslim world.[3]

In discussing the Danish cartoons of prophet Muhammad (peace and blessing be upon him), I first want to say that I am by no means surprised that they were published. As shocking as this may seem to some, the reaction of Muslims, the abuse of their sentiments and the cartoons themselves are not at all surprising. It's a continual perpetuation of Islamophobia and an ignorance perpetuating ideation from Western civilization.

First, Western civilization has historically shown the utmost disrespect and utter disregard for others' cultures, ideas, beliefs and human rights. We, as Westerners, have stood on our high horses and have pointed our fingers at others as we cursed them as being backward or uncivilized. Many say that the reactions of Muslims were barbaric. Certainly the burning of embassies and the murdering of innocent bystanders is by no means an acceptable reaction, but when one plays with the feelings and sentiments of 1.5 billion people, what can be called an acceptable response? Well, I'll tell you one.

Esposito: Common Ground - Muslims and the West
JOHN L. ESPOSITO, United Press International, 3/8/06

Newspaper cartoons of the Prophet Muhammed have set off an international row with dangerous consequences, both short and long term. The controversial caricatures, first published in Denmark and then in other European newspapers, target Muhammed and Islam and equate them with extremism and terrorism. In response to outcries and demonstrations across the Muslim world, the media has justified these cartoons as freedom of expression; France's Soir and Germany's Die Welt asserted a "right to caricature God" and a "right to blasphemy," respectively.

One of the first questions I have been asked about this conflict by media from Europe, the U.S. and Latin America has been "Is Islam incompatible with Western values?" Are we seeing a culture war?

Everyone in the Middle East rewrites history, but never before have we had a US administration so wilfully, dishonestly and ruthlessly reinterpreting tragedy as success, defeat as victory, death as life - helped, I have to add, by the compliant American press. I'm reminded not so much of Vietnam as of the British and French commanders of the First World War who repeatedly lied about military victory over the Kaiser as they pushed hundreds of thousands of their men through the butchers' shops of the Somme, Verdun and Gallipoli. The only difference now is that we are pushing hundreds of thousands of Arabs though the butchers' shops - and don't even care.

Last week's visit to Beirut by one of the blindest of George Bush's bats - his Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice - was indicative of the cruelty that now pervades Washington. She brazenly talked about the burgeoning "democracies" of the Middle East while utterly ignoring the bloodbaths in Iraq and the growing sectarian tensions of Lebanon, Egypt and Saudi Arabia. Perhaps the key to her indifference can be found in her evidence to the Senate Committee on International Affairs where she denounced Iran as "the greatest strategic challenge" facing the US in the region, because Iran uses policies that "contradict the nature of the kind of Middle East sought by the United States".

“The US can't promote democracy but then reject the results of this democracy.”
(Amr Moussa, Arab League Secretary General)

Jimmy Carter, the former US president, leading a team of 900 foreign observes said, the elections in the West Bank and Gaza Strip were "completely honest". Definitely honest, compared to the standards set by the US, when George Bush ‘won’ the Florida 2000 election by denying the blacks (Afro-Americans) and all the other coloured folks a vote, as they were poised to vote for the democrats. It must have brought pleasant memories back of the good old days, when the likes of Bush could literally chain and lynch those black folks; never mind vote, they would be lucky, if they could breath.

The turnout was 78 percent of 1.3 million voters, greater than most of the ‘democracies’ in the West, where the election results are known even before the election. Such ‘elections’ are determined by money, and not the votes: and if this is democracy then we need to redefine what constitutes oligarchy! It was amusing to see the responses of the Western leaders; some of them could be described as idiotic even if I was to be kind!  Anyway, I have taken the liberty to respond to those comments on behalf of Hamas. If my answers are at odds with the Party position, I hope they will correct me.

I have lived in Denmark for over 35 years. During most of this time, I have enjoyed all the great traditions of this lovely country that I used to call my second home. I have always appreciated values which have made Denmark famous all over the globe - democracy, humanism, solidarity with the underprivileged, human rights, respectful dialogue, and non-violent protests. On top of all this, one quality which I have most benefited from, without fear or harassment, is the freedom of expression.

During most of the 25 years of my political work, the process of criticizing the powerful and the mighty, then being criticized in return, went on until 2003 when Ekstra Bladet carried out a deliberate character assassination campaign against me, through front page lies and manipulation of words. It was that horrible experience that made me realize the power of the media and how the noble concept of freedom of expression was being monopolized by some arrogant and unprincipled journalists who had no scruples in destroying an individual's lifetime work.

Prophet Muhammad condemned violence against civilians and teached of virtue.

The recent violence over the offensive cartoons shows that Islam is truly the most misunderstood religion in the world, even among some Muslims. A little knowledge of the life and sayings of Prophet Muhammad would have saved the world a great deal of trouble.
It would have been helpful for the editorial boards of Danish and European newspapers to understand that Prophet Muhammad condemned violence against civilians. It also would have been helpful for them to understand that Muslims love Prophet Muhammad more than any other person in the world and that he taught people to be considerate, kind and generous.

Islam, the Media, and the Alleged Jihad Plot Against Canada

By Archemedez (06/10/2006)

Most Canadians are having some difficulty making sense of the recent foiled terrorist plot, announced by police officials on June 3, 2006. Allegedly, these Canadian terror suspects, who may have had international connections, had called their plot "Operation Badr," named after the legendary Battle of Badr, in which Islam's prophet Mohammad and his men carried out a raid and defeated a much larger force. Allegedly, the targets of the planned truck-bombings included the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSE) building, RCMP headquarters, CSIS, the CBC, as well as the Parliament buildings in Ottawa. Reportedly, the attacks were intended to kill Canadian civilians. In the scheme, members of Parliament had also been targeted for kidnapping and possible beheading. There were plans to behead the Prime Minister.

Why would these 17 alleged terrorists, all of them Muslim males, want to attack Canada? The most common explanation given is that the alleged terrorists wished to punish Canada in retaliation for its military role in Afghanistan, where Muslims are being killed. The seemingly most obvious goal of the attacks was to cause Canadians to pull their troops out of Afghanistan, and, supposedly, to save lives of Muslims. This fits with the alleged demands of the accused, namely, to force Canada to remove its troops from Afghanistan and release Muslim prisoners.

I was disgusted to see the ignorant things written by Mike Quarantello ("Border profiling necessary," Jan. 25). Oh, how sad that you too have been searched at the border. Now here's a question: Have you ever been accused of being a terrorist? By you being a white man in America, I find that highly unlikely.

To make matters worst, after giving your "we all go through it too" speech, you go on to say that if anyone feels that border profiling is unjust, they should leave. To me, you sound pretty reminiscent of the white conservatives of the 1960s, who, in protest of the integration laws, asked African Americans to go back to Africa. You echo these sentiments another time in saying that Muslim-Americans will lose in the U.S. Supreme Court and that by fighting against their injustice they only make matters worse.

I NEVER dreamt I'd be defending a holocaust-denier. But then again I never thought I would need to.The "denier" in question, David Irving, a precocious British historian (aren't they all?), was jailed recently in Austria for denying the Holocaust -- a crime that in Austria, along with 9 other European countries warrants years of prison time.

A rather toadish looking fellow, Irving claimed that the number of Jews murdered at Auschwitz might be lower than originally claimed. "Given the ruthless efficiency of the Germans," Irving asks, "If there was an extermination program to kill all the Jews, how come so many survived?" Irving has capitulated somewhat, recanting his earlier theory and favoring instead the idea that the death tolls of the Holocaust (putting it lightly) might be slightly "off".

In November of 2005 -- and here comes the most insidious part -- Irving was arrested in Austria on his way to a university lecture. Although he may look like a disheveled badger, and his views are undeniably despicable, Irving is worth defending for two reasons.

First, the idea of free speech means that Irving's right to deny the Holocaust eclipses the complaints of those to whom such speech might be offensive. Europe should not pretend to loathe all things fascistic while its laws are replete with tactics used by Hitler, Franco, Stalin and Mussolini. By imprisoning Irving, Austria sets a dangerous precedent: that nations can revise history simply by jailing any naysayers. Granted, in this case, Austria has erred on the side of truth, but one should not be so optimistic for future cases. One might recall similar tactics used by Stalin to "revisit" Soviet history -- only Stalin preferred his ubiquitous death squad to prison.

I am not exaggerating when I say that no one would have expected that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would have become a celebrity all over the world. He became the main topic in the news and the center of discourse. Ordinary people and intellectuals have become preoccupied with the campaign for and against the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The event also has had an impact on the attitudes of governments.

A Message For The Dissenters, Hate Mongers And Bearers Of Half Truths
By Edwin Ali

The world is in the throes of dissent, enmity, hatred, malice and violence and religious leaders and believers in God, irrespective of the religion they follow, should promote the cause of peace and unity, rather than sow the seeds of discord and fanning the flames of bigotry and prejudice.

Religious tolerance has reached a new low in this land of the free, where freedom and justice should reign, but where hate mongers have hijacked the rights of individuals and use the print and electronic media as well as television to brain-wash the innocents into believing that one religion, ISLAM, is seeking to dominate the world. The Holy Qur'an makes it clear that there is no compulsion in religion. Chapter 2, v 256

As the followers of Islam tread a thin line between social justice and stereotyping, the world is being led to believe that this is a violent religion and some of its followers are satanic. The same can be said of other religions.

In this country, freedom of speech is an inherent right, but while freedom gives you the right to be wrong, it does not allow you to do wrong and that is exactly what is being done by some religious leaders, with impunity in many cases, and at the same time, denying the right of the followers of this faith, numbering 1.5 billion, to respond to these blasphemous and despicable assertions, because the media in most cases, is not open to them.

People generally have short memories and so I think it is necessary to remind the public of some of the comments made, not by Muslims, but rather, by non-Muslims, of the Religion of Islam.
